The BURG is 100 years old!
A reason to celebrate and to look back on our history – and also an opportunity to highlight the capabilities that make our university of art and design what it is!
Paul Thiersch took office as director of the original art and craft school on 1 July 1915, and this is regarded as the starting point of the BURG’s history. It was Thiersch who put into practice modern training based on the ideal of the ‘Bauhütte’ or stonemasons’ lodge and also on the ideas of the German Association of Craftsmen (Deutscher Werkbund); this educational philosophy would in turn become influential for other schools.
Over the last 100 years, the BURG has evolved continually and developed into a university of art and design that explores the space between the poles of free and applied forms of art and design, and between experimental practice and cross-disciplinary research. Next page
In 2015, we will be providing insights into our fields of activity and our ‘idea workshops’, and we will be showcasing the visions that the BURG is developing to help shape spheres of artistic activity as well as our society as a whole. Who are we, what are our foundations, how do we define our tasks for the future? We wish to use our anniversary year to come together with partners and friends from near and far to discuss these questions in exhibitions, symposia, workshops and other events.
